POKEMON PLATINUM WALKTHROUGH

The Road to Solaceon Town

Take the east route out of Hearthome City and you'll run into your rival, who will battle you:

It should be a relatively simple battle if you just exploit the elemental weaknesses of each Pokemon. When that's done, head east onto Route 209.

In the southeast corner of Route 209 (right where the route bends from east to north), you'll find a rocky structure known as the Hallowed Tower. If you insert the Odd Keystone you received earlier in here, and talk to 32 people in the Sinnoh Underground, you will get the chance to battle a Spiritomb.

North of the Hallowed Tower, you'll find the Lost Tower, a Pokemon Graveyard. There's not much you can do here at the moment, but you can find TM27 - Return inside. On the third floor, you'll notice the area has become foggy. During foggy conditions, Pokemon will have reduced accuracy and this can only be removed by the HM Defog (which you probably don't have). Just north of the Lost Tower is Solaceon Town.

Solaceon Town

The main location of interest here is the Day Care Center, where the owners will hold up to two of your Pokemon. While here, they will gain one experience point per step you take, but more importantly, if they are in the same egg group, they have a chance of producing an egg. After you deposit your first two Pokemon, exit and re-enter the Day Care Center and the man there will give you the Day Care Checker app for the Poketch.

Head east as far as you can from the Day Care Center and down a few ledges. You'll see the entrance to the Solaceon Ruins, home of the Unown. There are many rooms inside, but luckily there aren't any loops or magic doors. Each room will be clearly marked as a dead-end (there's a single rock in the room) or more stairs signalling you can proceed. If you're in a rush to get to the end, take the top right stairs, bottom left, top right, top left, top left and bottom left. You'll arrive in a room with four item balls: a Nugget, a Mind Plate, Odd Incense as well as HM05 - Defog. To get the item ball on the ledge by the entrance, you will need to catch all 28 types of Unown, and enter the Ruin Maniac's Tunnel on Route 214.

Head north from Solaceon Town onto Route 210. You can use your bike to get over the mudslides, but your bike won't work in the overgrown grass. At the far end of Route 210, you'll come across the Cafe Cabin, where you can purchase some Moo Moo Milk to heal your Pokemon. There's some trainer battles inside as well. You'll see the road north is blocked by some headache-prone Psyduck, so head east onto Route 215. This area is always raining, and Rain Dance will automatically be set up during battles.

Veilstone City

After your wet journey through Route 215, you'll arrive at Veilstone City, home of the Game Corner and the Pokemon MegaMart. You'll also see a Team Galactic presence on the north side of town, and some meteorites on the east side of town. These meteorites can be used to transform Deoxys into one of its four formes - Normal, Attack, Defense and Speed. Anyway, to progress, head to the Gym on the southeast corner of the city, and you'll bump into Rowan's assistant. While you two talk, Pastoria City's Gym Leader, Crasher Wake, will emerge from the Veilstone Gym. He'll talk to you briefly before both him and Rowan's assistant leave. Enter the Gym and prepare for a fight.

Veilstone Gym has changed from Diamond and Pearl. Instead of sliding partitions across the gym, push the punching bags to knock any obstacles out of the way. By pushing them, you will also free up some walkways to get to Maylene, the Gym Leader. You should concentrate on knocking the three sets of tyres on the west side of the gym down. The punching bags will travel as far as they can until they reach an orange clamp in the overhead railing, so certain bags will need to be pushed multiple times.

If you followed my advice from Eterna Gym and you got yourself a Starly, it should have hopefully evolved by now and a Staravia should be able to handle this gym quite easily. Otherwise, any Psychic or Ghost types like Kadabra and Haunter will make this a quick battle.

Maylene will award you the Cobble Badge when you beat her, which lets you use HM02 - Fly outside of battle, as well as make all Pokemon of level 50 and below obey you, even if they were obtained in a trade. You will also get TM60 - Drain Punch, which absorbs HP equal to half the amount of damage caused.
